Best Drones Under $300

You don’t need to break the bank to buy a fun, reliable drone.

If you’re looking to buy your first drone, whether for racing or just for the fun of it, searching for the top-rated drones might result in sticker shock. Sure, the DJI Inspire 1 looks AMAZING, but at nearly $3,000, it’s not worth the investment if you’re a novice hobbyist.

If you’re a beginner, you’ll want a drone that’s easy enough to fly to get a handle on everything but also tough enough to survive a crash caused by human error or technical malfunction. Fortunately, there are a number of great drone options out there for under $300. They often include cameras (of lesser-quality, of course) and first-person view (FPV) flying options, as well as bumpers to protect the blades and hardware while you’re still learning the basics. Then, once you’re confident in your skills as a drone pilot, you can decide whether to upgrade to a more expensive, professional drone.

Two of these drones fall below the FAA requirements for registration, which only costs $5 per aircraft and will save you from dealing with fines (or worse) if the authorities catch you flying an unregistered drone.

DBPOWER Hawkeye III

Microdrone 3.0

Syma X8G

Walkera Runner 250

Parrot AR.Drone 2.0 Elite Edition

LaTrax Alias Quadcopter

DBPOWER Hawkeye III

The Hawkeye II features all the bells and whistles you’d want from your first drone, in a slick package. It has a headless control feature, which just means that it’s easy to maintain control, regardless of where the “front” is facing.

Once you’ve got the basics down, this is just a downright fun drone to fly. It’s got stunt buttons built in to the controller, so you’re able to pull off awesome flips at the press of a button. Its bigger size means it handles well, even on windy days. You also have the option to use FPV through a smartphone app using a VR headset (not included), but, given the camera quality, you’re probably not going to feel comfortable flying it in first-person. Also, keep in mind that using the camera will cut into the overall flight time, since it drains the battery.

One thing to consider about this drone is the color. It sure looks sharp in all-white, but if you’re flying it high in the sky on a cloudy day, you might find yourself losing visual contact with it.

Specs:

Dimensions: 13.2″ x 13.2″ x 7.3″

Weight: 3.5 lbs

Camera: Yes (1MP, 720p)

Average flight time: 10 minutes (without camera)

FAA registration required?: Yes

Microdrone 3.0

The MicroDrone 3.0 raised over $3 million on IndieGoGo and, like the name suggests, is the smallest drone on this list, but don’t let its small size fool you. This is a fully-capable drone with a ton of features jam-packed into a small, minimalist package.

Competition intensifies for smartphones with bigger and better front-facing cameras

Flagships these days iterate on their prequels, so there’s little room for innovation. Each year you get a better camera, more storage, additional RAM, larger display and battery, but nothing really new is added in terms of functionality.

Apparently we’ve reached a point where the only piece of hardware in a smartphone that can be upgraded is the … front camera. It looks like competition is intensifying on various markets for smartphones with high-quality selfie cameras.

For example, in South Korea, many handset makers launched at least one smartphone with an unusually large front … – Source

Drone footage shows devastating aftermath of Italy earthquake

Drone footage released by Italy’s fire and rescue corps shows the devastating aftermath of the magnitude 6.6 earthquake that hit central and southern Italy on Sunday morning.

The video, taken over the town of Amatrice, revealed demolished buildings, crumbling façades and streets clogged with debris. The town of about 1,000 people was also battered by Italy’s Aug. 24 earthquake and a series of aftershocks last week.

Sunday’s earthquake is potentially Italy’s largest earthquake since a magnitude 6.9 quake struck southern Italy in 1980, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

Daily Briefing: LG tries to fix what's broken, and Samsung goes all-in on AI

This was the best Friday since last Friday. Here’s what you need to know for October 28, 2016.

I was on a plane today and saw someone in the waiting area with a Galaxy Note 7. I facetiously tweeted out that I could either ignore the problem and hope for the best or tackle him and remove his phone forcefully. In fact, I did neither: I let the flight attendant know that I thought I saw someone using a Note 7, but by then I had lost him in the crowd, and they said they’d be making an announcement.

Airport waiting areas are really interesting for a number of reasons. It’s a concentrated area full of diversity, people anxious to return home or begin their adventures. It’s also full of technology. These days, I keep a look out for the phones people are using, and the equipment they use to stay connected. Tablets, even iPads, appear to be less common than they were a couple of years ago as smartphone sizes have grown. I see a lot of Galaxy S6s and 7s, a lot of iPhones and, in the U.S., quite a few Droids. I still even see some BlackBerrys in business class.

These pocket computers have taken over our lives. Have you welcomed your new phone overlord, lately?

Report: Snap (formerly Snapchat) to raise $4 billion with its IPO; company valued at $25-$35 billion

As you might know by now, the parent company of messaging app Snapchat has changed its name to Snap. It plans on going public and raising money via an IPO this coming March, that will raise in the area of $4 billion. This values the company at $25 billion to $35 billion. That is a far cry from the $70 million valuation placed on the company during its first round of financing back in 2013.

Next major Windows 10 "Creator's" update is coming for free in spring 2017

The update brings about a major focus on 3D content creation and simplified multimedia and game sharing.

Microsoft had quite a few interesting new devices to show off on stage today, including the new Surface Book i7 and the Surface Studio. Between all this and the attention-challenging length of the presentation, it was arguably quite easy to slightly neglect the big software news, namely the next major Windows 10 update.

New rumor suggests vivo X9 will feature dual front-facing cameras as well

If you recall, a recent leak suggested that vivo’s upcoming smartphone will carry the X9 moniker, and will feature a dual rear-camera setup. Now, according to a new rumor, the device will have dual front-facing cameras as well.

In addition, the rumor suggests that the handset will also have a 6GB RAM variant, which will be unveiled next month, presumably alongside the already-rumored 4GB variant on November 17. As for other specs, Snapdragon 653 chipset and 64GB storage have been tipped so far.

US Grand Prix, through a novice’s eyes: Do these always feel like a parade?

Sam Machkovech

ELROY, Texas—The FIA has one shot a year to tell a Formula 1 story that’s all America, apple pie, and loud cries of “yee-haw!” Currently, that takes place down the road from Austin, the Texas state capital, at the annual US Grand Prix. This past weekend, over 100,000 fans descended upon the barely developed town of Elroy, home of the Circuit of the Americas, to watch the world’s fastest F1 racers. (The official attendance figure for the three-day event was 269,899.)

Thanks to random happenstance, I was one of them. What started as a cheap flight to visit relatives turned into my first live F1 race, complete with access to decent season-ticket seats and an experienced F1 fan at my side.

State of the biggest, best union: Trump nightly webcast debuts tonight

Donald Trump’s Presidential campaign will deliver its first tease of a potential Trump TV network on Monday with the launch of Trump Tower Live, a web-only video series aired on Facebook Live that promises to deliver “nightly campaign coverage from Trump Tower.”

The show’s first episode will be co-hosted by official Trump campaign advisers Boris Epshteyn and Cliff Sims as well as TheBlaze political commentator Tomi Lahren. According to a report from Wired, Trump Tower Live’s premiere episode will include interviews with Trump campaign manager KellyAnne Conway and another campaign adviser, along with live footage of Trump’s Monday night speech in Tampa, Florida.

Chances are that Conway’s interview on Trump Tower Live will have a different tenor and tone than the interview she conducted with NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday. In her Sunday interview, she admitted that the Trump campaign is “behind” and was asked repeated questions on why Trump mentioned suing his accusers during a campaign stump speech on Saturday in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Alright, this is just plain clever.

Building a gaming PC, especially something you wan to be VR-ready, is a fun challenge. You can try to make your kit as small and compact as possible so it doesn’t interfere with your play space, you can go all out and mount the whole thing in individual pieces on your wall, or you can go somewhere in between. Typically, being portable isn’t something you can actually pull off unless you want to sacrifice power and jack up costs by going with a VR-ready laptop.

The devastating Walking Dead Season 7 premiere left two beloved characters with their skulls bashed in and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) pledging his allegiance to a sadistic murderer with a baseball bat fetish, and the show’s producers are feeling pretty good about it all.

During this week’s Talking Dead aftershow, executive producer Scott Gimple admitted that their goal wasn’t just to break Rick Grimes in the premiere, but to break everyone watching at home, too.

“The hardest thing about it was, starting the script, what would break Rick? And then taking it further,” he explained. “It was all in the book, in issue 100, but [we were] looking for a way to break the audience too. Not in a way that is in any way to hurt them, but for them to believe that Rick Grimes would be under the thumb of Negan; that he would go through an experience that would do that to him; and that the audience would go through the experience too, so they would believe that Rick would do what this guy says.” …

Instagram live video streaming might be on its way

Considering the success of Facebook live video on that platform, it was only ever a matter of time before it was introduced to Instagram’s photo sharing community. Although Instagram has received flak for blatantly ripping off Snapchat’s stories idea, live streaming video certainly feels at home on Instagram.

In the beta app, Stories icons now appear at the top of the Explore tab as well as on the home screen. The first Stories icon in Explore features a “live” tag and takes you to a page labelled “popular live broadcasts” (which is obviously not yet functional).

I tried getting this working on a Nexus 6P running a developer preview of Android 7.1 and a OnePlus 3 running Marshmallow but had no luck. If you manage to get it working, let us know in the comments.

Report: LG will get rid of its Friends modules for the G6

The LG G5 isn’t a terrible phone, but its sales figures would definitely lead you to think otherwise. LG’s effort to incorporate “Friends” modules into the G5 caused the phone to fail in a number of aspects. With the recently-released V20, the company ditched the Friends idea, and according to reports coming out of South Korea, it will do the same with the G5’s successor, the G6.

This report, which came on the 20th, states that the G6 is expected to have a normal smartphone structure.

Google's Pixel survives durability tests, including a bend test, that last year's Nexus 6P succumbed to

Ah, the iPhone 6 Plus. Not only was it Apple’s first phablet, but after many owners realized that their shiny, huge new iPhones were bending in their pockets, it also became the phone that truly introduced bend tests to the world.

YouTuber JerryRigEverything performs durability tests on almost every flagship smartphone that gets globally released, and when the world saw him do one (and then another) on a Nexus 6P, it was shocked at the Huawei-built device’s seemingly twig-like snapping.

Double-dip Internet-of-Things botnet attack felt across the Internet

Our new IoT overlords have arrived. (credit: peyri)

The distributed denial of service attacks against dynamic domain name service provider Dyn this morning have now resurged. The attacks have caused outages at services across the Internet.

But this second wave of attacks appears to be affecting even more providers. According to Dan Drew, the chief security officer at Level 3 Communications, the attack is at least in part being mounted from a “botnet” of Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices.

Drew explained the attack in a Periscope briefing this afternoon. “We’re seeing attacks coming from a number of different locations,” Drew said. “An Internet of Things botnet called Mirai that we identified is also involved in the attack.”

Google Pixel XL teardown shows easily replaceable modular components

The Pixel XL has been subjected to an iFixit teardown. Stripping the smartphone down to an empty shell, the repairmen noted that the OLED panel (manufactured by Samsung) separated from the digitizer glass a bit too easily, as super-thin components and no frame or bezel behind the display make it difficult to remove.

The battery is secured with two strips of fairly strong adhesive. Many of the smaller components in the Pixel XL, such as the headphone jack and 8MP front facing camera are modular, meaning they can be replaced independently as inexpensive parts and … – Source
