Noveto’s audio tech wraps you in bubble that is silent to outside world

BARCELONA, Spain—I’ll admit to being a little sceptical as I sat down to listen to Noveto’s private speaker system.

The current prototype—which like an old iPod speaker dock of the sort you’d find knocking around the bargain bin of a supermarket in the early ’00s—doesn’t exactly inspire me with confidence. Neither do the cheesy infomercial-like videos, which highlight the various ways in which having a private speaker—that is, one that only you can hear—might prove useful. And yet, as a focused beam of audio hit my ears with a clarity far richer than the robotic din of the MWC show floor might otherwise allow, it’s hard not to be impressed.

Noveto, a small startup from Israel, hopes that its private speaker system might one day eliminate the need for headphones—no wires, no wireless, no nothing, just crystal clear audio. You could imagine a busy office where, instead of having to hold a phone up to your ear to take a call, you could whack it on a private speakerphone, leaving your hands free to take notes. Or, you could play a split-screen game, with each player able to hear a completely unique audio track. Those who struggle with their hearing could have a louder audio beam for themselves.

Bill Gates' response to 'Formation' is underwhelming, unlike Beyoncé

Sure Bill Gates has a lot going on, but one of the habits of successful people is certainly keeping tabs on Beyoncé.

Gates talked to Wired about protecting customers’ private information from FBI. He also finally responded to the divine honor of being name dropped in “Formation,” and his response is pretty lukewarm.

Chelsea Manning denied EFF articles because US Army cares about copyright

(credit: Timothy Krause)

Apparently the US Army is interested in a zealous interpretation of copyright protection, too.

According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a Chelsea Manning supporter recently attempted to mail Manning a series of printed EFF articles about prisoner rights. Those materials were withheld and not delivered to her because, according to the EFF, the correspondence contained “printed Internet materials, including email, of a volume exceeding five pages per day or the distribution of which may violate U.S. copyright laws.”

Other materials, including lengthy Bureau of Prisons documents, were allowed through, and so the EFF concludes that “it was potentially copyright concerns that resulted in Manning’s mail being censored.”

Survey: More Americans support FBI than Apple in San Bernardino iPhone case

As the FBI and Apple continue to very publicly exchange words over whether the Cupertino company should have to help law enforcement unlock the iPhone that belonged to one of the shooters in the San Bernardino shootings, a new survey suggests that more Americans support the FBI than Apple.

A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center found that 51% of Americans think Apple should comply with the court order and unlock the iPhone, while 38% think they shouldn’t and 11% remain undecided

The survey was conducted between Feb. 18-21, and polled 1,002 adults — half of whom were interviewed on a cell phone and half of whom were interviewed on a landline. Notably, both Democrats and Republicans were both strongly in favor of Apple unlocking the iPhone; 56% of Republicans polled and 55% of Democrats thought the company should comply with the court order, according to the survey. Pew also found only small differences between those with different levels of education. …

The IMDb Material Update (v6.1) Leaves Beta, Now Available To All

IMDb is a very, very popular app with over 50 million downloads on Android. It’s a shame, then, that the app has been behind the curve of Android design for so long. After releasing a redesigned beta last month, the updated version is now available in the Play Store for everyone. It finally brings this app into the material age.

The changelog only lists one item—the interface.

Volvo is bringing Spotify to its cars

Today at MWC in Barcelona Swedish car maker Volvo has announced that it’s bringing a native Spotify app to its cars, starting with the new XC90, S90, and V90.

The app will be preinstalled in Volvo’s Sensus user interface, which makes use of “the large real-estate of the tablet-like touch screen” in the aforementioned models.

You’ve been able to listen to Spotify tunes in your Volvo car even up until this point, but only via Bluetooth or Apple CarPlay. The new native Spotify app will enable “a much richer experience and a search functionality that non-native applications cannot deliver”, according to the press release.

The app will be accessible “this spring” to Volvo owners in every country where Spotify is available. It will “get the most out of the Bowers & Wilkins sound system” that you can find in the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90. Use of the app will require a Spotify Premium subscription of course, with a 30-day free trial being an option for those who have never used the service…

Galaxy S7 and S7 edge found to sport Sony IMX260 camera sensor, custom audio chip

As you probably know, Samsung finally made the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge official yesterday, following many months of leaks. We’ve gone hands-on with the two devices, we’ve taken an in-depth look at the camera they are sporting (paying special attention to the autofocus mechanism), and we’ve even seen a teardown of the S7 already.

And now we have some new information about the camera which is included in both the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge. Despite what many rumors had claimed, Samsung hasn’t used its own Britecell sensor. This is obvious from the camera’s specs, when you consider that the Britecell sensor has 1 micron pixel size, while the S7 duo employs one with pixels that are 40% larger.

It turns out that the sensor Samsung is using for the S7 models is made by Sony, and its model number is IMX260. This follows in the footsteps of the IMX240 which was used last year in the Galaxy S6 line and the Note5. Both the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge should use this Sony IMX260 sensor in all markets, which means image quality is going to be the exact same everywhere. Interestingly, the front-facing camera’s sensor is identical to the one from 2015’s flagships.

On the other hand, it looks like Samsung has developed a custom audio chip for the S7 family. A device info app identifies this as the “Lucky CS47L91 Sound” – and “Project Lucky” was actually the codename for the Galaxy S7. So it could be that this is a custom-made chip by the Korean company. Hopefully it will enable higher-quality audio when compared to past top of the line Samsung…
