ARM unveils Mali-G71: new architecture with an eye on VR

Here’s a side of GPU to go with that new Cortex-A73 processor. The Mali-G71 makes the transition to a new architecture, Bifrost (the T880 it replaces and all the way to T6xx used Midgard, used as early as 2012 for the Nexus 10).

The G71 focuses on two things – Vulkan and VR. Vulkan is the new graphics API, which aims to provide high performance on both desktops and mobiles.

ARM’s newest CPU design wants to make throttling a thing of the past

Many companies, Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm included, like to rely on their own custom ARM CPU architectures for their chips, but the CPUs and GPUs that ARM itself designs for other companies to use are still important. They let commodity chipmakers like MediaTek and Rockchip offer chips with good performance for less money, and they serve as a sort of pace car for the rest of the mobile industry.

Enter the new Cortex A73 CPU architecture and the Mali G71 GPU. These are new high-end designs that target 2017’s flagship phones and tablets, but they’ve also been designed with virtual reality and augmented reality in mind.

Cortex A73 is being positioned as a replacement of sorts for Cortex A72, which in turn replaced Cortex A57. Like its two predecessors, it’s a high-end 64-bit CPU design, and it can be paired with with “little” Cortex A53 or A35 cores that handle light or idle tasks to reduce power consumption.

Meanwhile, Excel gets improved auto-complete, as well as the ability to expand or collapse grouped rows and columns. PowerPoint seems to be the only one getting no features, aside from Tell Me.

Tell Me is a very welcomed addition considering the popularity of these apps, as well as the fact that they are popular for being more complex and full. An American startup is hoping to overhaul the stuffy insurance industry with a couple of swipes.

On Monday, Trov launched its latest product in Australia: On-demand insurance for single items through its mobile app. Founded in 2012, the company’s free iOS and Android app previously allowed people to create a digital inventory of their possessions, but it’s now adding an extra level of service. The insurance offering is currently iOS-only.

Earlier this month, it appeared that the HTC smartwatch would finally be unveiled after a few false starts. None other than Evan Blass (known in the past by his @evleaks Twitter handle) said that the timepiece would be unveiled during the week of June 6th.
