Apple drops prices for storage upgrade options on older Macs

Just after Apple proudly debuted its newest MacBook Pros, the company quietly lowered the prices of high-capacity storage upgrades for older Mac products on its website. Reports show that anyone purchasing a MacBook Air, iMac, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, and the old MacBook Pro will save up to $100 if they get the 512GB or 1TB options.

Getting extra storage used to add $300 to $400 (512GB) or even $700 to $900 (1TB) to the cost of the device, but for these older models, Apple appears to have shaved off some of the price. For example, upgrading the 256GB 13-inch MacBook Air to 512GB of SSD PCIe-based flash storage costs $200 now, instead $300. For the base model of the 27-inch iMac with Retina 5K display, it now costs $400 to upgrade to 512GB of flash storage, which is $100 less than earlier this year.

Apple is still selling the 2015 13- and 15-inch models of the MacBook Pro. The 15-inch model that comes with 256GB of storage can be upgraded to 512GB for $200 and 1TB for $600, down from $300 and $800, respectively. Those are actually the same prices for the same upgrades to the new 15-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, only the new model also has a 2TB upgrade option for an additional $1,400. The 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro is a bit trickier, since it comes standard with just 128GB of SSD: it can be upgraded to 256GB for $200, 512GB for $400, and 1TB for $800.

Hey Samsung Galaxy Note7 users, LG's V20 is worth a look

If you’re one of the brave few who are still clutching on to Samsung’s recalled Galaxy Note7, I can’t blame you.

The Note7 was an amazing phone — still is, for some. But with its discontinuation and flight ban, it’s only a matter of time before you have to make the tough decision of what phone to get after handing your Note7 over to the authorities.

Consider this: The LG V20. It has the same 5.7-inch display, dual-cameras, an additional always-on display, solid battery life, and runs Android 7.0 Nougat.

It doesn’t compete on every level with the Note7, but it comes close to giving you the same experience. …

Samsung’s new smartwatch, the Gear S3 has already made its debut in Europe, but customers in the United States will have wait a while longer. The South Korean company confirmed the Gear S3 smartwatch will arrive in the U.S. sometime this month.

Connecting a PC to a television isn’t exactly a revolutionary idea. Ditto for a mobile device – it’s harder to do now that dedicated HDMI ports are gone, but streaming screens and content via Chromecast has sort of filled the gap.

Zayn thinks women should be in charge, and more revelations from his new book

If you’re looking for dirt in Zayn Malik’s new book, Zayn, proceed in another direction.

The former boy bander sticks to his script about the boys in One Direction, maintaining that he just wanted to make different music and dim the spotlight a little. He addresses his broken engagement with Little Mix’s Perrie Edwards only to say that they were together, and then they weren’t. He makes no reference to his romance with Gigi Hadid, despite being fairly public about their love.

Instead, he looks inward and hopes it will provide clarity to fans, documenting his anxiety, the “freefall” he went into after leaving One Direction and his devotion to his mom. He’s never been one for interviews, so he uses the book to get a few things off his chest, making it a must-read for longtime Directioners. …

Asus Zenwatch 3 goes on pre-order in the US for $229.99

The latest smartwatch from Asus can now be pre-ordered in the US. The Taiwanese company announced the Zenwatch 3 at the end of August at IFA, following up with pricing details for the US last month. And now you can make sure you’re among the first people to wear a Zenwatch 3 if you pre-order it from B&H.

The price you’ll need to pay for that privilege is $229.99, which is very decent for a wearable that comes with a round screen and no ‘flat tire’ design. Perhaps the biggest shortcoming of the Zenwatch 3 is that it doesn’t have a heart rate sensor. The watch should start shipping at some…
