Facebook could be sued for censoring this 19th-century nude painting


PARIS — Facebook lost a crucial legal battle Friday as a Paris court ruled the social network can be sued in France over its decision to remove the account of a French user who posted a photo of a famous 19th-century nude painting.


The ruling by the Paris appeals court could set a legal precedent in France, where Facebook has more than 30 million regular users. It can be appealed to France’s highest court.


It means a French court will now be entitled to hear the case of Frederic Durand-Baissas, a 57-year-old Parisian teacher and art lover whose Facebook account was suspended five years ago without prior notice. That was the day he posted a photo of Gustave Courbet’s 1866 “The Origin of the World,” which depicts female genitalia. …

Mario Woods, the San Francisco man whose fatal shooting by police was recorded in a harrowing video posted to social media in December, suffered at least 20 gunshot wounds and had a combination of drugs in his system at the time of his death, autopsy results showed Thursday


Woods, 26, died from 20 gunshot wounds to his back, head, buttocks, legs and hands, with an additional “probable gunshot graze wound” to his cheek, according to the autopsy report released by San Francisco Chief Medical Examiner Michael Hunter.

Massive gas leak in Los Angeles finally plugged after 16 weeks


A blowout at a natural gas well that gushed uncontrollably for 16 weeks and drove thousands of residents from their Los Angeles homes was plugged Thursday, a utility said.


While the well still needs to be permanently sealed with cement and inspected by state regulators, the announcement by Southern California Gas Co. marked the first time the leak has been under control since it was reported Oct. 23.
