Republican senator's convoy chased away by group of elephants

Arizona Senator Jeff Flake got more than he bargained for during a recent trip to learn about wildlife in Africa.

The Republican senator shared video on Thursday showing a group of elephants chasing his convoy in Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park.

The video shows the elephants, with their ears spread wide, chasing the rapidly retreating group out of the park. Flake posted the video on Twitter, and joked that the elephants — the symbol of the GOP — “have no respect for a fellow Republican.”

The senator was a part of a larger group of U.S. politicians who were visiting Africa on a “four-country fact-finding mission in the region to better understand wildlife conservation,” the U.S. embassy in Zimbabwe …

New Samsung promo video presents the Galaxy S7 as a unique virtual reality machine

Samsung today released a short Galaxy S7 promo video – embedded below – to let the world know that the new device is more than just a smartphone.

According to Samsung, the S7 is the only “virtual reality machine” with expandable storage, fast wireless charging, low light camera, and water resistance. Of course, the Galaxy S7 itself isn’t exactly a virtual reality machine, but it becomes one when it’s paired with the Samsung Gear VR headset – which is offered for free to customers who pre-order or buy the smartphone before March 18 (at least in the US). Secret 'Mortal Kombat' arcade menus hide a 'Galaga' clone (and more)

Mortal Kombat is full of secrets, apparently.

YouTuber YourMKArcadeSource discovered hidden “EJB” menus in the first three Mortal Kombat arcade games that — among other things — unlock a challenging Galaga clone and open up a video of all the game’s fatalities playing back to back.

SEE ALSO: The CW takes a gamble on primetime esports, with mixed results

The letters “EJB” are the initials of Ed Boon, creator of the Mortal Kombat series. The menu titles suggest that he’s the one who programmed the hidden menus into the arcade games.

Unlocking the menus involves pressing the player one and player two block buttons in a very specific, very complicated sequence. The process for each game is laid out in the video, so give it a watch if you want to do this yourself. …

Satellite imagery shows Iran preparing to launch satellite

A recent satellite image of Imam Khomeni Space Center shows that the launch gantry for a Simorgh “satellite launching vehicle” is in position for fueling and launch of the rocket. (credit: Arms Control Wonk/ Middlebury/Airbus Defense and Space)

Just weeks after North Korea successfully launched a satellite into orbit, Iran is preparing an attempt to match that effort—and rocket ahead in the development of its own ICBM technology in the process. Images obtained by Melissa Hanham, Catherine Dill, and Dr. Jeffrey Lewis of Arms Control Wonk from Apollo Mapping and Airbus Defense and Space show that the Imam Khomeni Space Center near Semnan, Iran is actively preparing for a launch. The Iranian government has issued a NOTAM (notice to airmen) warning them away from the area from March 1 to March 2.

The Khomeni Space Center is near Semnan, Iran—about 200 kilometers east of Tehran. The launch vehicle being stacked there, called the Simorgh, is designed to put a 100 kilogram payload (220 pounds) into a low earth orbit of 500 kilometers (310 miles, or roughly 270 nautical miles).

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani holds a press conference in front of the Simorgh “satellite launching vehicle” being assembled in an Iranian attachment facility in 2015.

The satellite, which was unveiled in February, is called the Friendship Testing Satellite. It’s essentially a giant “cubesat” carrying a number of experiments. And like the North Korean Kwangmyŏngsŏng-4 satellite launched in February, the Friendship Testing Satellite is roughly the mass of a nuclear warhead.
