Well that was quick. A couple of days after a bug affecting iOS started making the news, Apple has released a fix. iOS 9.3.1, now available on the iPhone and iPad, fixes this bug. The changelog is quite sort as there’s only one item. “Fixes an issue that caused apps to be unresponsive after tapping on links in Safari and other apps,” it says. Read More

New update for the Samsung Gear S2 is now available for download

Last week, Samsung released an update for the Gear S2 smartwatch and now owners of the watch are treated to another one. The latest update weighs in at 20.39 MB and is available from the Samsung Gear app.

Sadly, the company didn’t update the changelog of the latest update and you can find the same bullet points from the one from a week earlier. We can only guess what changes the new update brings, but it’s safe to assume that some bugs needed ironing out and there are no new features this time.

'Violent' man on plane arrested after he wanted to do yoga instead of sit down

HONOLULU — A Japan-bound airplane returned to Hawaii because of a violent passenger who wanted to do yoga instead of sit in his seat, the FBI said.

The pilot of the March 26 United Airlines flight from Honolulu International Airport to Narita International Airport turned the plane around after hearing that Hyongtae Pae was yelling at crew members and shoving his wife, the FBI said in a criminal complaint.

Pae told the FBI he didn’t want to sit in his seat during the meal service, so he went to the back of the plane to do yoga and meditate. He became angry when his wife and flight attendants told him to return to his seat. “Pae pushed his wife because she was trying to make him stop,” the complaint said. “He felt that she was siding with the flight crew.” …

China's latest body trend meme: Using an iPhone 6 to prove you have skinny legs

It looks like no amount of bad press will deter some women from putting themselves through bizarre challenges, simply to prove to others that they have the ideal body.

Just two weeks ago, Chinese women were taking to their social media accounts to post pics of their skinny midriffs that can be hidden behind an A4 sheet paper.

Beta Marshmallow build of OxygenOS for OnePlus 2 is now accessible to all, not OTA though

A couple of weeks ago OnePlus started soak testing its update to Android 6.0 Marshmallow for the OnePlus 2 with a few users to check for bugs and whatnot. That test was not an open one, but things have changed now.

Starting today you too can download and try a beta build of Marshmallow for the OnePlus 2, namely OxygenOS 3.0. You do need to manually flash it though, because it’s not available as an over-the-air update. That’s because the Chinese company wants to make sure all possible kinks have been ironed out by the time the OTA rollout starts. The good news is that this build will…

Watch out, Waze: INRIX’s new Traffic app is coming for you

Jonathan Gitlin

INRIX Traffic’s map screen. It uses OpenStreetMap for map data and INRIX’s 275 million connected cars and devices for real-time traffic.

6 more images in gallery

You may not have heard of INRIX, a traffic data company based in Kirkland, Washington. But if your car’s navigation system has real-time traffic data, there’s a good chance you’ve been using its services. For example, the Audi A4 and Telsa Model X we drove earlier this month get real-time traffic data from INRIX. In the BMW i3 and i8, INRIX provides the range finder service that lets you know how far you can go before needing to recharge (and where you can do that).

Today, the company is taking aim at the mighty Waze with a new smartphone app that leverages its vast crowdsourced traffic database.

Do you remember what it was like trying to navigate in days of old? Back when some of us started driving, if you didn’t want to get lost, you needed a map. (Remember them?) In 2000, then-President Clinton opened up the US’ GPS network, and consumer navigation systems started to proliferate, first as standalone devices, then as installed infotainment systems in our cars, and finally on the screens of our smartphones.

Report: Wii U will be Nintendo’s shortest-lived home console

This patent application may point to Nintendo’s next home-console controller—and now, it may be the only thing that Nintendo Wii U fans can look forward to, thanks to a Wednesday report from Japanese business publication Nikkei. (credit: US Patent Application 2015/0355768)

Nintendo’s Japanese arm has assured investors that the company will unveil its new gaming console, currently code-named Nintendo NX, by the end of this year, but it hasn’t had nearly as much to say about the future of its current major home product, the Nintendo Wii U. That might be because its time is nigh. In spite of a few major Wii U exclusives slated to launch this year—particularly a major new Legend of Zelda game—a major Japanese business publication has now claimed that the hardware in question will cease production by the end of 2016.

A Wednesday-morning report from Japan’s Nikkei pegs this year as the final year of Wii U hardware production—a crazy prediction, to be sure, considering that its console successor doesn’t even have an official name or release date. However, that report also backs up its claim with the allegation that some Wii U accessories have already been discontinued.

If true, that may explain why Japan saw some substantial Wii U shortages in the past few months. A Nintendo World Report story in February pointed to a substantial sales drop-off in Japan after selling 250,000 Wii U consoles in December of last year and over 40,000 consoles in January 2016. That count dropped to 4,000 for the first week of February.

Is this a Huawei P9 spotted in the wild in the hands of the company’s president?

Huawei is currently running a very teasing ad campaign regarding the upcoming P9, which isn’t slated to be officially revealed until April 6. However, enough images have been leaked of the device so far that we already have a pretty decent idea of what the handset will look like. Unless this is an elaborate ruse on an unprecedented scale, it looks like we’ve gotten another glimpse of the P9 in the hands of Huawei’s president.

See also: Huawei P9 renders leak, revealing dual-rear camera and plenty of color options12

What do we know so far about the Huawei P9? First and foremost, the dual camera riding on the back seems to be cause for celebration among the brand’s fans. We can’t wait to actually get our hands on the device and see how well the dual 12MP cameras do in terms of image quality. That’s a rumored spec, of course, but there are many other rumored specs for the P9 running around. For instance, we believe it will run Android 6.0 Marshmallow right out of the box, and that it’s powered by 3GB of RAM and a Kirin 950 chipset. The screen is a delightful 5.2-inch 1080p screen by all accounts, and we’d be very surprised to find it’s packing anything other than a 3,000mAh battery. The selfie snapper? Word on the street is 5MP.

What do you think of the Huawei’s latest flagship? Excited to see it finally unveiled two weeks from now? Let us know your opinion in the comments below!

Supreme Court punts in 1st Amendment Madden NFL legal fight

(credit: Electronic Arts)

Without comment, the Supreme Court on Monday declined to side with Electronic Arts’ contention that it had a First Amendment right to use professional football players likenesses without their permission in one of the world’s most popular video games, Madden NFL.

EA’s petition to the Supreme Court had attracted widespread interest from academics, digital rights groups, (PDF) and others. The dispute was at the intersection of the right-of-publicity claims balanced against modern technology allowing for virtual, realistic portrayals of people—in this case, professional athletes who want a piece of the financial pie.

In its petition to the justices, the game maker claimed it should not be allowed to be sued simply because it made a game that looks too real, that it nearly mirrored reality. It wanted the high court to accept its assertion that its life-like depiction of the virtual gridiron was covered by the First Amendment.

Google Glass’ apparent successor debuts—on a pawn shop’s eBay page

Glass! It’s back! (credit: A-to-Z Pawn Brokers)

We’re still not sure what Alphabet, Google, or the X division will call any new wearable headset unit to follow 2013’s Google Glass, but we know something is in development—and now, at least one piece of unannounced hardware could be yours for the low, low price of $3,250 and counting (as of press time).

Another shot from the eBay listing, which was still live as of press time.

2 more images in gallery

9to5Google spotted an eBay auction on Saturday with the simple title of “Google Glass (black),” and the images revealed an unreleased model that shares apparent similarities with a December FCC filing for a new headset—particularly new-to-“Glass” features like a folding hinge, an outward-facing LED light, and a different charging interface. Additionally, we see the all-caps word “GLASS” printed on the inside of the black-plastic hinge, and the letter A in particular has an artful slant to it—which makes us wonder why Google blacked out its Glass-related social media channels in January. With no confirmation from anyone in the Google or Alphabet camps, we can only go on how much this pawn shop’s hardware resembles that in the December FCC filing—meaning, if this headset is a hoax, it’s an impressive one.

Attempts to contact the San Francisco pawn shop in question, A-to-Z Pawnbrokers, were not fruitful, as the business is not open on Sundays. The Verge also couldn’t get a response from the shop about the hardware’s origins.

How the demonization of emulation devalues gaming’s heritage

If game companies won’t embrace emulation themselves, this kind of thing will have to do… (credit: Frank Cifaldi)

For years now, “emulation” has been a dirty word in the video game industry, regarded by many companies as nothing more than an illegal, piracy-fueling technology that represents an existential threat to the gaming business. In a passionate presentation at the Game Developers Conference this week, though, gaming historian and developer Frank Cifaldi made a well-reasoned case for the industry at large to embrace emulation as a way to capture its heritage.

“I think emulation has gotten a bad rap over the years,” Cifaldi said. “I think our industry and consumers have a really bad misconception of what emulation is. Emulation is just software that makes a computer act like a different computer.”

Cifaldi traces emulation’s bad reputation in the game industry back to a 1999 Macworld conference keynote by the late Steve Jobs. Saying that he wanted to make the Mac “the best game machine in the world,” Jobs introduced the Connectix Virtual Game Station, a $49 piece of third-party software that “turns your Mac into a Sony PlayStation.”

Emergency security update coming to Nexus devices due to discovered exploit

The promise of monthly security updates is refreshing, but not even keeping devices that protected is enough sometimes. Google has just announced they are releasing a mid-month security patch due to the discovery of an exploit that could bring harm to some devices; namely, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.

The issue arose after Google found out about a rooting application using an “unpatched local elevation of privilege vulnerability in the kernel”. What this means is that a malicious application would have the power to affect the code within the software. The only way to fix the handset then would be to re-flash the whole operating system.

See also: GranitePhone interview details the only way to make Android more secure9

It’s still a bit hard to be affected, though. Google does protect you from such apps in the Google Play Store, and even uses Verify Apps to keep external threats away. The only way to have been affected is if you were convinced to manually install the rooting app.

This advisory applies to all unpatched Android devices on kernel versions 3.4, 3.10 and 3.14, including all Nexus devices. Android devices using Linux kernel version 3.18 or higher are not vulnerable.

There’s multiple layers of security, but if you are living on the wilder side you can rest assured the update is coming within a few days. Android partners have also been informed of the issue and the AOSP repository has been updated with the new information. So if you see a random update coming to your phone soon, it’s just Google watching over us.

275 million Android phones imperiled by new code-execution exploit

(credit: Gil Dabah)

Almost 300 million phones running Google’s Android operating system are vulnerable to a newly developed drive-by attack that can install malware and take control of key operations, a security firm has warned.

A proof-of-concept exploit dubbed Metaphor works against Android versions 2.2 through 4.0 and 5.0 and 5.1, which together are estimated to run 275 million phones, researchers from Israeli security firm NorthBit said. It attacks the same Stagefright media library that made an estimated 950 million Android phones susceptible to similar code-execution attacks last year. The following video demonstrates how a malicious attacker might use a Metaphor-style attack to take control of a phone after luring an unsuspecting end user to a booby-trapped website.

Metaphor – Stagefright Exploitation Breaking ASLR.

The NorthBit-developed attack exploits a Stagefright vulnerability discovered and disclosed last year by Zimperium, the security firm that first demonstrated the severe weaknesses in the code library. For reasons that aren’t yet clear, Google never fixed the vulnerability, even though it eventually patched a different bug that had made the Zimperium exploits possible. While the newer attack is in many ways a rehash of the Zimperium work, it’s able to exploit an information leak vulnerability in a novel way that makes code execution much more reliable in newer Android releases. Starting with version 4.1, Android was fortified with an anti-exploitation defense known as address space layout randomization, which loads downloaded code into unpredictable memory regions to make it harder for attackers to execute malicious payloads. The breakthrough of Metaphor is its improved ability to bypass it.

I tried out Nike’s self-tying shoes, the HyperAdapt 1.0

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few days with the folks at Nike, who were showing off a whole bunch of new and upcoming products at their Innovation for Everybody event. The big attention-getter was the HyperAdapt 1.0 — namely, self-tying shoes. Nike had already toyed with the idea of emulating Back To The Future Part II by announcing limited edition, self-lacing Nike Mags… Read More

Creative Control explores the dark side of augmented reality—with humor

Here’s what the future looks like: collecting data on people while wearing AR glasses.

In the film Creative Control, set in near-future New York, people can slip on a pair of normal-looking glasses and experience a world that is part reality and part fantasy. This is what companies like Google and Microsoft have been trying to achieve with AR: technology you can wear on your face that doesn’t look completely ridiculous and allows the wearer to access a constant virtual overlay on the real world. There are obvious privacy concerns associated with this kind of device, namely, that you can record people without their knowledge. But there’s also the risk that your real and virtual worlds become so intertwined that you won’t know the difference. That’s exactly what happens in Creative Control, with fascinating and genuinely funny results.

David (Benjamin Dickinson, who also directed and co-wrote) is an ad executive who hires musician Reggie Watts (playing himself) to create something using augmented reality glasses for a new client, the appropriately named Augmenta. David is also tasked with trying out a pair of the AR glasses. He talks to friends in the street, goes to parties, and works while the glasses collect data on anything he sees. He then uses this data to create virtual fantasies—which are centered around an avatar of his best friend’s girlfriend. Whenever he is having a bad day at work or gets in a fight with his own girlfriend, he puts on the glasses and escapes into his fantasy world. It’s probably not giving too much away to reveal that David’s virtual world does not make him any happier—the technology makes him anxious, paranoid, and unable to focus on his real life.

Augmented reality eyeglasses aren’t on the market yet, but Creative Control feels like it could happen in the next five minutes. The film captures the addictiveness of consumer technology—and sometimes, the loneliness and anxiety that can follow—with alarming accuracy. We see characters use their smartphones (which, in this vision of the future, look like see-through iPhones) to argue and – Source

Alcatel Idol 4 Pro spotted on GFXBench with 6-inch display, 20MP camera

Just a day after an alleged render of Alcatel’s Idol 4 Pro smartphone (shown below) leaked online, the Windows 10-powered device has been spotted on GFXBench, revealing some of its previously-unknown key specs.

The listing reveals that the handset sports a 6-inch display, and features a 20MP rear and 9MP front camera. RAM is listed as 2GB, although we think it should be more than that (3 or 4GB considering it’s a high-end device). Internal memory should be 64GB.

Other specs, such as 1080p display resolution and Snapdragon 820 SoC have been mentioned in some earlier rumors as…

T-Mobile brings YouTube on as a Binge On content provider, after negotiation

After Google called out T-Mobile on sneakily throttling all of YouTube’s data over T-Mobile’s towers, T-Mobile got a lot of backlash for doing so without notifying YouTube nor its customers first.

The biggest reason why YouTube raised these concerns was because T-Mobile took it upon itself to throttle all video streams without notifying the provider (in this case YouTube). Content providers shouldn’t have to let its customers’ experience suffer just because a carrier happens to lower the quality of content being provided to the customer.

After further discussions and…

The do's and don'ts of March Madness office pools

March Madness — and the subsequent office madness — gets underway on Thursday.

Office pools can be a fun way for diehard fans of either college basketball or Hoosiers to bond with their colleagues.

But bosses worry that these pools might not be such a slam dunk when it comes to worker productivity or abiding by the law.
