Idris Elba, Damon Albarn and Ebola fighters among New Year's Honours recipients


BRISTOL, England — Actor Idris Elba, Blur frontman Damon Albarn and campaigners against Ebola are among the 1,196 people receiving New Year’s Honours in the UK for making life better for other people or being great at what they do.


The list this year sees a rise in the proportion of women awarded at senior levels — 38% at the knighthood/damehood/C-level, up from 31% at the birthday awards. The list is 48% female overall

Among those receiving knighthoods are choreographer Matthew Bourne, who was behind the all-male production of Swan Lake, former TV journalist Martyn Lewis and former horse racing jockey AP McCoy. Actress Imelda Staunton received a CBE. Actors James Nesbitt and David Oyelowo received OBEs (Order of the British Empire), as did cyclist Chris Froome and snooker player Ronnie O’Sullivan …
