Oculus apps allegedly cause overheating, battery drain on recently updated Galaxy smartphones

It looks like owners of the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge, Galaxy S7, and Galaxy S7 edge have been complaining of battery drain and overheating problems since a recent update was pushed to their handsets. A Reddit user alleged that their phone discharged down to 86% in just 15 minutes of very minimal use, with the screen getting uncomfortably hot. Google Allo’s limitations explained in one word: “India”

The Google Logo for India Independence Day 2014. (credit: Google Doodles)

Google’s new instant messaging client Allo doesn’t seem like a compelling product. Allo is missing many of the basic features you might expect in an instant messaging app: it only works with one device at a time, it doesn’t work on a desktop or laptop computer, it doesn’t support tablets very well, it doesn’t use a Google account, and it doesn’t support SMS. Allo has had a curiously incomplete product launch, and many Google users are left wondering what the company was thinking.

Allo’s limitations are deal breakers for many people in the hyper-connected developed world, but what if you’re not in a developed country? Google hasn’t explicitly come out and said so, but Allo’s features and Google’s actions around the launch of Allo all point to it being targeted at developing countries, and one developing country in particular: India.

NASA changed all the astrological signs and I’m a crab now

Enlarge / The new sign, “Ophiuchus,” means “Snake Bearer.” And who’s got two thumbs and loves snakes? THIS GUY RIGHT HERE. (credit: Wikimedia Commons)

According to a post on NASASpacePlace, everything we thought we knew about the influence the heavens have over our Earthly lives has been thrown into chaos. NASA has announced that the celestial sphere above us contains not twelve canonical zodiacal constellations, but 13. The heretofore overlooked constellation, Ophiuchus, is purported to guide and command events surrounding humans born between November 29 and December 17—so, if you used to be a Sagittarius, then congratulations: you’ve got a new sign, baby!

The addition of Ophiuchus—the snake bearer, in case you were wondering—has obvious and far-reaching implications for the entire western Babylonian-derived zodiac calendar. For one thing, squeezing it in means changing the effective dates of all the other signs. According to Yahoo News, the new 13-sign calendar plays out like this:

Capricorn: January 20-February 16

Aquarius: February 16-March 11

Pisces: March 11-April 18

Aries: April 18-May 13

Taurus: May 13-June 21

Gemini: June 21-July 20

Cancer: July 20-August 10

Leo: August 10-September 16

Virgo: September 16-October 30

Libra: October 30-November 23

Scorpio: November 23-November 29

Ophiuchus: November 29-December 17

Sagittarius: December 17-January 20

The changes are as sweeping as they are staggering. For example, I woke up this morning firmly believing that I was an outgoing, courageous, independent, generous Leo. However, now I have to come to grips with the fact that I am in fact a stupid, sulky, inconsiderate, pessimistic Cancer. I have gone from lion to crab, and it weighs heavily upon me.

While we have seen a lot of “mini” iterations of popular flagship smartphones, these devices tend to fall in the mid-range category. Sony is the lone holdout in this regard, with their Compact devices only shrinking in size, while retaining the specifications and features of their flagship counterparts, which is the case with one of Sony’s latest offerings, the Xperia X Compact.

Everything has been fast and responsive, and the device can even handle high-end games without struggling. Granted, the load times may be a little longer, but once a game loads, it runs very smoothly, with rarely any dropped frames to be seen. Overall, the performance has been quite impressive, and goes beyond what you would expect from a mid-range processor like the Snapdragon 650.

Hardware

As far as storage goes, 32 GB is your only option, but expandable storage via microSD card allows you to add up to 256GB additional storage, which should take care of all your needs.

Above and below the display are two thin slits that house the dual front-facing stereo speakers. The overall volume is on the quieter side when compared to other front-facing setups, but the quality of the sound is actually quite good, with clean, clear sound, with no distortion.

However, you will have a far better audio experience when plugging in a pair of headphones. The Xperia X Compact has built in support for Hi-Res Audio like FLAC, ALAC, DSD, and LPCM, but if you don’t have audio in these formats already, the device can also upscale any compressed audio files to give it a Hi-Res sound.

The Xperia X Compact comes with a 2,700 mAh battery, which allows for surprisingly good battery life, helped along by the relatively lower resolution display that it has to power. The battery comfortably provides a full day of use, and even with heavy usage that involved a lot of gaming and watching videos on Youtube, I rarely had to charge the device in the middle of the day.

The device comes with Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 support, and given the capacity of the battery, it doesn’t take long to get back to a full charge at all. However, one thing to remember is that Sony doesn’t include a QC 3.0 charger in the box, so you will have to pick up a third-party one to take advantage of the phone’s fast charging capabilities.

Camera

Sony is also making a big deal about the camera of the Xperia X Compact. The front 5 MP shooter is a fairly standard wide angle lens camera, and gets the job done when it comes to taking selfies. On the back is a 23 MP camera, which is the same sensor that is found with Sony’s higher-end offerings like the Xperia XZ.

With Plex Cloud, you don't need a local media server

Media player/server Plex is one of the most versatile independent solutions for folks with a big multimedia collection, but it has so far required users to run server software to power client apps on TVs and other gadgets.

With today’s launch of Plex Cloud, the server part of that equation is no longer necessary.

SEE ALSO: Official Plex app arrives on Apple TV

The feature relies on Amazon’s cloud and lets users build a media collection, without running their own server; setting up, Plex claims, takes less than 60 seconds.

Plex Cloud offers unlimited storage and all the Plex features, save a few (Camera Upload, Offline Sync and the recently launched DVR aren’t available at launch, Plex says), will work the same as with a regular Plex account. …

Leak: Sony Xperia XZ & X Performance to get Nougat from October

Xperia users have been longing to know when they can get their hands on beginning in the first week of October.

The month of December is also slated for the Nougat upgrade for the 2015 Xperia Z series, including the Xperia Z5 line of handsets, the Xperia Z3+ and the Xperia Z4 tablet. Last in the pipeline will be the Xperia XA and XA Ultra, which are scheduled to receive the Nougat update sometime in early 2017.

The Xperia M4 Aqua/M5 and C4/C5 Ultra were not included in the slide, which means they are not likely to get the Nougat treat. Practically speaking, Sony didn’t say it’s going to extend the list of devices getting the Nougat update, so it’s better not to get your hopes too high at this point in time.

If you own one of the devices listed in the roadmap, share with us how you feel about the update plan.

Twitter could be for sale, Google and Salesforce reportedly interested in acquiring it

According to some unnamed sources cited in a new report, Twitter might be for sale. Not only that, but potential suitors for the ailing social network are said to include Google and Salesforce, among other tech companies. A “formal bid” may be on the table very soon.

It’s no secret that Twitter isn’t doing very well lately, or that Google’s efforts in the social space haven’t been able to create a real competitor for Facebook. So such an acquisition, if it happens, does have the potential to help both parties. Then again, it could just turn Twitter into Google’s latest failed attempt at…

AT&T sues Nashville in bid to stall Google Fiber

Enlarge (credit: Google Fiber)

AT&T has sued Nashville to stop a new ordinance designed to accelerate the deployment of Google Fiber.

The lawsuit (PDF) was filed in US District Court in Nashville yesterday, only two days after the Nashville Metro Council passed a “One Touch Make Ready” rule that gives new ISPs faster access to utility poles. The ordinance lets a single company make all of the necessary wire adjustments on utility poles itself, instead of having to wait for incumbent providers like AT&T and Comcast to send work crews to move their own wires. Google Fiber says it is waiting on AT&T and Comcast to move wires on nearly 8,000 poles.

AT&T’s lawsuit claims that the ordinance is preempted by Federal Communications Commission pole attachment regulations and violates AT&T’s 58-year-old pole attachment contract with Nashville. The company seeks a declaration that the ordinance is unlawful and a permanent injunction preventing the local government from enforcing it.

Lauren Kate's 'Fallen' movie has potential to be YA sensation

The first trailer for Fallen, a movie adaptation of Lauren Kate’s popular YA book series, finally landed online this week, immediately drawing comparisons to The Twilight Saga. Whether it can repeat the success of that franchise is another question, seeing as its release date still remains up in the air.

It wasn’t immediately clear which company posted the trailer, which circulated among Fallen fans (aka Fallenatics) after a low-quality copy was uploaded to YouTube.

Relativity is currently listed as Fallen’s U.S. distributor on the film’s IMDb page, and the company’s CEO, Ryan Kavanaugh, encouraged his 155,000 Twitter followers to spread the word and help the trailer go viral on social media earlier this week. However, a spokeswoman for the studio told Mashable on Thursday night that she could not immediately confirm whether Fallen was, in fact, an official Relativity release at this point. …

Micromax to launch four smartphones with Google Duo pre-loaded

According to a Press Trust of India (PTI) report, domestic handset maker Micromax will launch four 4G smartphones in India for the festive season. The company has partnered with Google to preload the latter’s video calling app, Duo, on these smartphones.

These budget smartphones will be priced under $100, and the ‘video series’ will help users discover video calling with Duo.

“Video calling is perceived to be a very urban phenomenon and niche but at Micromax, we believe that there is a huge potential to massify the service by taking it beyond the tier 1 markets where Micromax has an unmatched edge,” Micromax co-founder Vikas Jain told PTI.

According to research firm IDC, 15.4 million 4G smartphones were shipped in January-March 2016 quarter – a growth of more than six times over the same period last year. Sales of 4G smartphones have grown significantly in India as operators expand their high-speed Internet services (4G-LTE) networks in the country.

The Duo app, first announced by Google at its I/O developer conference earlier this year, was launched last month for Android and iOS users and aims to compete against apps like FaceTime and Skype by offering seamless, one-to-one video calling. It allows users to connect using their phone numbers without the need for a separate account.

See also: Why Google Duo has very little chance of succeeding187

Google claims that Duo has been built to be fast and reliable, so that video calls connect quickly and work well even on slower networks – something that is relevant for the Indian market. Within the first month, Duo saw over 10 million downloads with US and India being the top countries in terms of downloads. However, 5 million of these downloads were in the first week, implying the buzz tapering off after the launch.

Deadly snake keeps it basic this season by hiding in an Ugg boot

5 top smartphones in the 48-hour Amazon Unlocked Event

For the next 48 hours, Amazon will be hosting a sale event with crazy deals on a number of unlocked smartphones. The key word here: unlocked.

There are several benefits to purchasing an unlocked smartphone. The major one is the flexibility and freedom customers have across carriers and distances. Humanity left Africa in one big surge

Enlarge / Based on the new data, nearly every out-of-Africa map available on the web is wrong in some way. This is perhaps the least wrong. (credit: NIH)

By now, the big picture of humanity’s origins is pretty clear. Modern humans evolved in Africa over 100,000 years ago, but they took tens of thousands of years to leave the continent. Once they did, they rapidly spread across Asia and Australia, mating with some of the pre-modern (read: archaic) humans along the way.

But that big picture, often called “Out of Africa,” has a number of details missing. For one, our understanding of the genetic diversity within Africa is startlingly bad—so bad that we missed an entirely distinct African Y chromosome lineage for decades. And there have been numerous debates about the number of times humanity has left Africa. Was it a single big migration, or did we depart in waves?

A new series of papers has narrowed the scope of the controversy considerably. While there may have been more than one push out of Africa, there’s only one that really ended up mattering.

Android apps support finally arrives on Chrome OS stable channel

Good things come to those who wait, and nowhere is this truer than for some Chromebook users who’ll start getting access to Google Play after nearly five months of waiting.

The wait line began to pile up in April when Chrome OS users turned to Reddit to share their sighting of a new option in the operating system that seemed to let users access Google Play, though the option was inactive at the time.

Then in May, Google officially announced during its I/O 2016 Conference that Google Play would be arriving on Chromebooks, beginning with the Chrome OS version 53 that hit the Dev channel in early June and followed by a stable Beta update in August.

Now the Play Store has become available for users of the Stable builds of Acer Chromebook R11 and Asus Chromebook Flip, the Chrome OS team announced in a blog post. Unfortunately for the Google Pixel (2015) users, there’s no word about a Stable build update for them yet.

The updated Stable channel version is 53.0.2785.129 and includes bug fixes, security updates and improved features. It is unclear when and how Google plans to roll out the Play Store to other Chromebook devices, though hopes are high that it won’t be long after the tech giant’s media event on October 4.

If you haven’t received the update yet, you may want to check your settings, then head to “About Chrome OS” and check for updates.

But even if you’ve updated to the latest stable channel version, you’ll still need to enable the Play Store in Chrome Settings. A caveat, however: the Google Play Store arriving on Chromebook R11 and Asus Chromebook Flip is still in beta version.

If you’ve already gotten your hands on Google Play in the stable channel, tell us your thoughts below.

Samsung Galaxy Note7 sales resume in US

If you recall, there were rumors recently that in the US, the Samsung Galaxy Note7 will be back on sale on October 21. However, turns out that’s not the case as the device is already available for purchase in the country.

At least two of the country’s Big Four carriers – Sprint and Verizon – have the new, safer version of the handset listed on their respective websites. All the three color options – Black Onyx, Silver Titanium, and Blue Coral – are currently available on both carriers. We expect other major carriers to join the party soon.

Komodo dragons fighting in slow-mo will make you stay indoors forever

In case you forgot just how magnificent and terrifying the natural world can be, refresh your memory with this intimidating slow motion brawl between two male Komodo Dragons.

The footage was captured by photographer Chris Bray while he visited the small Indonesian island of Rinca.

Bray left a GoPro and 360 degree Theta S camera in the bushes, catching all the action in an almost too-close-for-comfort battle of Godzilla-like dudes.

Komodo Dragons are carnivorous animals that can make a meal of water buffalo and deer, so Bray was smart to back away.

“The sheer scaly bulk of these two 80 to 90 kilogram [176 to 198 pound] Komodo Dragons battling it out … was enough to momentarily transport me back to the Jurassic period,” said Bray on YouTube. …

500,000 safe Galaxy Note7 units arrive in the US

Even if you don’t follow tech, the chances are, you’ve heard a thing or two about the self-combusting Galaxy Note7. Shortly after its launch in mid-August, reports about the Note7 exploding and causing damage started to trickle in; before we knew it, Samsung launched an official recall program, including in the US. The whole process has been rather confusing with different procedures and programs in each country, but Note7 owners in the US will be happy to learn that 500,000 safe Galaxy Note7 units have finally arrived in the US.

The past few weeks have been hectic for Samsung, I would imagine. And it’s been hectic for Galaxy Note7 users around the world as well. In the US, Samsung has urged current Note7 users to return their devices and wait for new units to arrive, but things haven’t really been smooth. Though Samsung claimed that Note7 users would get the Galaxy J as a loaner phone, users have complained that in reality, carriers often did not have loaner devices ready in stock or were simply unaware of the program.

To add to this chaos, both FedEx and UPS have refused to ship Note7 units back to Samsung due to safety concerns. It makes sense since one single unit that its user has forgotten to power off could mean a potential fire hazard. This meant users had to walk into a carrier store and turn it in themselves. But as data have suggested, many users were unwilling to do that until new units were available.

Well, Samsung is now saying that 500,000 safe Note7 devices have been distributed across the US, so in the next few days, you can go to a store near you and see if they have new units in stock. Mind you, Samsung has sold a total of one million Galaxy Note7 units in the US that all need to be replaced but so far has only provided 500,000 safe units. That means you are only guaranteed to be able to exchange it on the condition that stores around you are stocked with new Note7 units.

The safe units will come in a box with a black square marking, and you will also see a green battery indicator on the status bar instead of a white one. Be sure to let us know in the comments if you get your hands on a safe Note7 unit in the coming days!
