Michael B. Jordan is totally down for a 'Creed' sequel

Michael B. Jordan would gladly slip on Adonis’s boxing gloves again for a Creed sequel

“A character so rich as this, and the world he’s in, I want to see what happens to him next and what he does,” Jordan told the Associated Press in an interview. “Especially the way it ends off, it’s pretty cool. I think with success and time and circumstances, it would be exciting to come back and work with (co-stars) Sly (Stallone) and Tessa (Thompson) again.”

Bugatti is back in 2016 with the 1500hp Chiron

(credit: Bugatti)

One of the biggest thrillers being written in the car industry right now is what Volkswagen does to recover from its cheating diesel scandal. Estimates of the cost to VW Group vary widely, but most agree $10 billion is probably on the low end. That’s a lot of cash, even for one of the world’s largest auto manufacturers; questions abound over which projects, new cars, or even brands might find themselves in for the corporate axe. The latest plot twist will take many by surprise: VW-owned Bugatti will indeed build a replacement for the Veyron.

In October we learned that the new Phaeton—a technological flagship sedan that no one bought—would survive as an electric vehicle. R&D spending would be cut too; VW had has spending ~$12.6 billion a year on research, more than any of its competitors. The Bugatti Chiron was thought to be a goner for sure. VW Group is thought to have lost almost $5 million on every Veyron it sold and continuing to build ornate rocketships for plutocrats could seem at odds with a sober corporate rehabilitation strategy. But more than 100 orders were already on the books and the car will debut in 2016, the company announced today.

How does one top a Veyron? According to Bugatti boss Wolfgang Dürheimer, “the Chiron will set new standards in every respect. We will continue to produce the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car. This is the claim of Bugatti and our customers.” The new car will still use a turbocharged 8L W16 engine and all-wheel drive, but power is rumored to be up 50 percent at almost 1500hp (1100kW). Expect a mighty price tag too.

Vivo Y51 and Y51L receive TENAA certification

After the Y37A and Y51A, two more vivo smartphones have been certified by the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA. These devices carry a model number of Y51 and Y51L, respectively.

Specs-wise, the Y51 is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU, and sports a 5-inch (960 × 540 pixel resolution) TFT display. It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory. In terms of camera, the device features an 8MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter.

Weighing in at 157 gms and measuring 143.8 × 71.7 × 7.52 (mm), the handset runs Android 5.0 Lollipop. Color options include white.

The Y51L, interestingly, comes with a similar design and exactly same specs as that of the Y51 (except that it runs Android 5.0.2 out-of-the-box). So the main difference between the two smartphones isn’t exactly clear at this point.

In case you aren’t already aware, vivo is expected to unveil the X6 flagship today.

Ars talked with Michael Soluri and Eric Boehm at the Hubble@25 exhibit at the Intrepid Museum in NYC. Produced and edited by Jennifer Hahn. (video link)

NEW YORK—Michael Soluri is a New York-based photographer with the jealousy-inducing privilege of photographing a unique portion of space exploration: behind the scenes of NASA’s STS-125 mission to repair the Hubble Space Telescope. He spent four years photographing the crew and support personnel, from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Houston to the Atlantis shuttle launch at Kennedy Space Center.

Launched in January of 1990, the Hubble was repaired five times by Shuttle missions, but the fifth mission was “really a spectacular mission,” according to Eric Boehm, aviation curator of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York. Along with the first mission to repair Hubble’s optics, SM4 was the most important mission to keep the Hubble operational, replacing and upgrading the main data unit, batteries, and camera.

Russia airstrike appears to kill many in Syrian marketplace

BEIRUT — Airstrikes believed to have been carried out by Russian warplanes killed at least 18 people and wounded dozens more on Sunday in a northern Syrian town held by insurgents, Syrian opposition media reported.

Some reports said more than 40 were killed

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the airstrikes struck the town of Ariha, killing at least 18 people and wounding dozens more. The Local Coordination Committees, an activist collective, said the airstrikes struck a busy market, inflicting heavy casualties.

Top 10 trending phones of week 48

In this edition of our weekly Top 10 trending phones chart, we finally witness the Samsung Galaxy J7 get dethroned. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 enters the chart this week, and storms straight to number one mere days after its announcement.

Long-time champ Galaxy J7 needs to settle for silver this week, still closely followed by the J5 in third.

Ushered in by the Redmi Note 3, the previous-gen Xiaomi phablet joins the trending list in fourth, comfortably ahead of the Galaxy J2 – another regular. Next comes the Galaxy Grand Prime in sixth, showing no particular sings of loosing user interest week after week.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note5 have swapped places since last week, and the former is now in seventh, while the S-Pen-packing phablet is now in eighth. The Sony Xperia Z5 had the weakest week-on-week performance, losing a total of 6 places, now in ninth. In a bit of surprising development, the Samsung Galaxy A5 enters in tenth, keeping the iPhone 6s out by a few hundred hits.

Weekly poll results: Apple iPad Pro gets lukewarm reception

The Apple iPad Pro didn’t have it easy all week, taking hits from the majority of our readers. It’s been a while since a “Hot or not” poll of ours turned out not in favor.

The iPad Pro gathered a total of 37% of upvotes – less than 2 out of 5 people hit the thumbs up. Apparently, the productivity benefits of the large screen failed to entice most of you. There’s also the matter of the Pencil that needs to be recharged every now and then, and the Smart Keyboard that can only stay in this one position.

And that’s before getting to the less than affordable price tag, which certainly helped steer you to the downvote side. The additional $270 that the accessories will set you back aren’t particularly hot either, even if their currently limited availability might lead you to believe otherwise.

In all fairness the 12.9-inch Apple tablet is not exactly a mainstream device, so a widespread appeal was never part of its game plan. And certainly 37% of people aren’t designers and on-the-go video editors, so the iPad Pro still manages to speak outside of its target…

Heading into the holiday shopping season, there was a question about how the Apple Watch would fare during this time of the year. Marshmallow is rolling out for the LG G4 across Europe

LG is definitely working hard on bringing Android 6.0 Marshmallow to its latest flagship offer. After what was essentially a soak test in Poland and a bigger staged rollout on the company’s home market, users are now reporting that the update has started seeding across Europe as well.

The package weighs about 1.55GB and can be obtained through LG Bridge (the OEM’s new PC synch software). Judging by user feedback, the update is not available for every unit in Europe quite yet. The lucky few who have obtained the software mostly seem to be from Germany and own the H815. We also came across a list of G4 models that will, allegedly, be part of this first roll-out, but can’t really confirm its authenticity:

“Random Darknet Shopper” is back, and it just bought a $35 knockoff polo

(credit: !Mediengruppe Bitnik)

Last we heard from the “Random Darknet Shopper” over six months ago, it was returned to the Swiss art collective that made it after local authorities seized the laptop being used to purchase ecstasy online.

Now, the Shopper is back and soon to be on display in London. It’s even shopping again: this week it purchased a knockoff $35 Lacoste polo shirt from Thailand.

At its core, Random Darknet Shopper is a live art project that consists of a laptop running a program designed to do nothing else but randomly buy items off illicit Tor-enabled websites. !Mediengruppe Bitnik, the Swiss art collective behind the project, designed the bot-based art installation to have a budget of $100 in bitcoins each week. From there, the bot randomly chooses an item on Alpha Bay, currently the largest such dark market. (Previously it used Agora, which has since been shuttered.) Ultimately, the purchased item is shipped to the art gallery where the laptop itself is on display and added to the installation.

Engagement rings are about to look a lot different

Engagement rings aren’t immune to trends. The practice and styles have changed throughout history.

Some researchers suggest Neanderthals marked their mates by tying cords around their fingers, wrists and waists. It was a physical representation of their spirits being bound together. Ancient Egyptians sealed a marriage for all eternity with leather, bone and braided hemp rings. Early Romans used metal jewelry as a sign of ownership, placing a ring on the fourth finger of the woman’s left hand. They believed the finger held the Vena Amoris, or Vein of Love, that connected directly to the heart

While that particular theory is false (all fingers have a similar vein structure), the designated ring finger has stood the test of time …

Apple devices are top Black Friday sellers at Target

Target sold one Apple iPad every second during Thanksgiving. That includes sales made online and in brick and mortar Target stores. In fact, Apple products did quite well during Black Friday at the discount retailer. Inside the physical stores, Apple Watch was a strong seller. Both of those products were on Target’s Top Ten Best Selling items list for its holiday sales.

Also selling well during the last two days at Target was another product now associated with Apple. The Beats Solo 2 headphone was rung up quite often by Target cashiers. Last year, Apple purchased Beats Audio for $3 … – Source

You can drive this $100,000 SandRacer on the street

It might not look like it, but this Zarooq Motors sand racing car is street-legal.

Built in the United Arab Emirates, this sleek but boxy dune jumper has been designed based on lessons learned from decades of Dubai sand racing. You get all of that — and some seriously knobby tires — for a mere $100,000.

Despite its decidedly Middle Eastern origins, the car has been infused with Italian flair, German precision and American raw power. (Zarooq’s words, not mine.)

Underneath its lightweight but incredibly stiff carbon fiber form, the SandRacer is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that can produce either 400 or 500 horsepower — depending how much sand you want to displace. …

Thanksgiving with AA! | Podcast 042

Join us for a very special episode of the Android Authority Podcast! The full panel gets together (Joe Hindy, Jonathan Feist, Nirave Gondhia, Andrew Grush) and follows Josh on a Thanksgiving journey – they talk about the different plans they have for Thanksgiving before getting into the typical talk of what they’re grateful for. However, sprinkled among all of that are small rants about family, a bit of wine and whiskey, and talk about what YOU are thankful for! It’s the longest episode we might have ever recorded, but it also might be one of the funnest.

If you’re coming back from the Black Friday shopping, we hope that you stayed safe. If you’re just listening along with your Thanksgiving leftovers, pour the gravy on the turkey and press play!

A Boeing 757 landed on the blue-ice runway in Antarctica for the first time

In this age of modern air travel, it is relatively easy for anyone with the means to book a flight to almost any corner of the Earth

Unless that corner is Antarctica, a place where you cannot simply pave a runway and start landing planes

In Antarctic locations such as Union Glacier, the runway is blue ice: dense, intensely blue glacier ice formed when snow falls onto glaciers, gets compacted and recrystallizes. This is generally a place for cargo and military jets, such as the Russian Ilyushin.

But commercial jets are making progress — and the Icelandic airline Loftleidir landed the first Boeing 757 on the blue ice runway at Union Glacier on Thursday. …

J.K. Rowling opens up about why Harry named his son after Snape

LONDON — It’s a question some Harry Potter fans have pondered over ever since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows apparated its way onto our book shelves in 2007: Why, exactly, did Harry decide to name his second son after a man he spent most of his childhood despising?

In the final book’s epilogue, when Harry is saying goodbye to Albus Severus Potter at Platform 9 3/4, he tells his son he was named for two headmasters of Hogwarts. “One of them was a Slytherin and he was probably the bravest man I ever knew,” he says.

Rare white lion cubs are the first miracle of the holiday season

The Toronto Zoo’s eight-week-old lion cubs made their first public appearance on Thursday, displaying their cuteness in a video on the zoo’s YouTube channel.

Baby animals are almost always cute — but extremely rare baby animals? Who are only eight weeks old? And exploring their environment? They’re so adorable they would make Ebeneezer Scrooge himself squeal like a teenager at a Justin Bieber concert

The four male cubs were born Sep. 26 and 27, to white lion mother Makali. Doctors said their first 30 days of life would be crucial, and they are now reportedly all in good health

Happy Thanksgiving, tweets Washington NFL team

Newton once theorized that, in addition to the law of universal gravitation, there was another invisible force at work in our world: This force is most evident when a national holiday and a brand come in contact on Twitter, and, like gravity, it involves falling — or, as we call it in 2015, failing.

Sometimes the brand and holiday combination is just embarrassing. Sometimes, in the case of the Washington Redskins on Thursday, it’s a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad idea.

The newer AMOLED tech is harder to come by and more expensive to produce at the moment, while the “older” LCD technology is constantly being innovated on, so it is often a matter of personal preference which one to pick, if you care at all about the display technology in your phone.

Official Samsung Galaxy A9 listing hints at December 1 release

Ever since its first appearance in trademark documents way back in March, the Samsung Galaxy A9 has seen its fair share of rumors. Those include a few leaked specs sheets, the last one from only a few days ago, so it is safe to say we already have a pretty good idea of what the metal handset will offer.

Still, a little official confirmation is always welcome and it comes in the form of a new listing for the device on the company’s Iran website. The cited hardware coincides with what we already know, so it’s almost official. The Galaxy A9 is equipped with the new Snapdragon 620 SoC with four next-get Cortex-A72 cores, four Cortex-A53 ones and a fresh new Adreno 510 GPU. The impressive new mid-range chip is backed by 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage with a microSD card slot for up to 128GB more.

All this horsepower will be pushing pixels on a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080p, which adds up to 401 ppi. The camera setup includes a 16MP main shooter with HDR and autofocus and a 5MP selfie one. Connectivity is pretty standard with GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and the A9 should boot Android 5.1.1 out of the box. The only piece of the puzzle still missing seems to be the battery capacity.

The Samsung page also lists a December 1 launch date for the Galaxy A9 and we have every reason to believe the information. It is also worth noting that the enclosed photos are of the Galaxy A8 and merely a placeholder.

Get ready for Li-Fi, a technology 100 times faster than Wi-Fi

The world might eventually have to shift its reliance on Wi-Fi to Li-Fi, an alternative technology that scientists say can reach speeds of 1 Gbps in real-world use — 100 times faster than average Wi-Fi speeds.

At those speeds, you could download a high-definition movie in just a few seconds.

A company called Velmenni told the IBTimes UK that it took the technology out of the labs and into real-world offices and industrial environments in Estonia, where it was able to achieve those speeds.

Li-Fi transmits data using LED lights, which flicker on and off within nanoseconds, imperceptible to the human eye. It was invented in 2011, and in the lab, has been able to reach a mindblowing …

When Microsoft started taking pre-orders for the Lumia 950 XL smartphone in the US last week, it was revealed that the device will begin shipping by November 25. However, some of those who pre-ordered the device last week have already received their shipment email.

Those planning to order to the phone now are out of luck as the handset seems to be out of stock at Microsoft Store currently – it’s listed as ‘coming soon’ with ‘Email me when available’ button at the bottom.

As for the smaller Lumia 950 flagship smartphone, it is already available for purchase in the US since late last week – selling for just $19.97 on contract or $599 sans contract. Keep in mind that it’s currently exclusive to AT&T in the country.

With traffic fatalities rising, safety officials see tech as cause and solution

(credit: Jason Weaver)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released numbers on Tuesday showing a slight decrease in the number of fatal accidents in 2014, but an 8.1 percent increase in estimated fatalities in the first half of 2015 compared to the first half of 2014.

Speaking to Reuters, NHTSA head Mark Rosekind guessed that, although it’s too early to tell what has caused the increase in estimated fatalities, smartphone use may have contributed. “The increase in smartphones in our hands is so significant, there’s no question that has to play some role. But we don’t have enough information yet to determine how big a role,” Rosekind said.

While cautioning that the results for the January to June 2015 fatality estimate could be subject to major adjustments when the Administration does its year-end tally, the NHTSA posited that low gas prices throughout 2015 could have led to more driving from teenagers and other “risky drivers.”

Diversifying Technology Education

We all know the tech industry has a diversity problem. The major tech companies have released their bleak workforce diversity numbers, and one year later most of them are unchanged. Obviously, this is not an easy problem to fix. A workforce of white males naturally develops unconscious bias, which then impacts everything else. It leads to a “brogrammer” culture, a hiring bias… Read More

The New Yorker wants younger readers — but not enough to change itself

David Remnick describes his job like this: “to get The New Yorker from one shore to the other shore with our soul intact and…our clothes dry.”

The shores he’s referring to are the very distant beaches of print — that world of glossy paper and ink — and online journalism, the world of ephemeral pixels.

It’s a swim that’s very choppy for just about every magazine and newspaper, and has been for yearsThe New Yorker —piles of which exist in the apartments of everyone who considers themselves smart and savvy — is no different. Its strength is print. Now in its 90th year, the magazine still operates at a high level. In 2015, it won three National Magazine awards including one for general excellence …
