Adnan Syed, convicted murderer and subject of the wildly popular public radio podcast Serial, saw a major break in his case for a retrial: Maryland Court of Appeals ruled on Monday that his murder trial defense was “constitutionally ineffective” and issued an order that testimony should be heard from a witness who can offer him an alibi for the 1999 Baltimore murder of Syed’s high school sweetheart Hae Min Lee.
