Soccer has just and quite unexpectedly thrust itself into the centre of discussion at China’s NPC session this year, for one reason: one of the big fans of soccer is Chinese president Xi Jinping, who is using considerable influence to make his country more successful on the green field at international events. Xi Jinping is also keen on giving face to Chinese soccer fans, who were appalled by the latest dismal results of the national “eleven”, including at January’s AFC Asian Cup, where China surprisingly reached the knockout stage, to be defeated in quarter-finals by Australia 2-0. - Source
