Earlier this month, two prominent cancer researchers published a paper concluding that most cancers are triggered not by carcinogens but by what they called “bad luck”. Many scientists reacted with little surprise. Biologists have long understood that cancer is caused by combinations of errors made when cells divide and copy DNA. The consensus view is that some of those errors can be prompted by smoking or other external factors, while others are probably random.
