When Rama threatened a fast unto death

Is there a Sanatani tradition of aamaran upvaas (fast-unto-death)? Queen Kaikeyi in Valmiki's Ramayana goes into "kope bhavan" or "hall of the aggrieved" wherein she gives up food and water.
