Airtel and Vodafone carrier billing goes live on Google Play Store in India

Looks like carrier billing for Airtel and Vodafone is going live in India for Google Play Store. Google had officially announced the partnership at the Google Playtime event in India in October, but didn’t share any timeline. In May this year, Google had announced carrier billing with Idea Cellular, although the service wasn’t rolled out immediately.

Direct Carrier Billing (DCB) allows you to buy apps, music, books, and movies from the Google Play Store while the cost is reflected in your postpaid mobile bill or taken off your prepaid balance.

Unconfirmed reports suggest that the roll-out has been underway since last few days, but I can confirm now that it is working for me. I just set it up, and made the first purchase. You can set up carrier billing under the ‘Add a new payment’ option. It was seamless, really. To use the integrated billing system, each time you need to make a purchase, simply choose ‘Bill my Airtel Account’ on the payment method prompt.

Interestingly, Microsoft was the first to enable carrier billing in India. Idea Cellular had enabled carrier billing on Windows Store in December 2014.

Is carrier billing working for you on the Google Play Store? Tell us in the comments, and share which carrier are you on.

6-month old boy is moved out of harm's way just before a Samsung Galaxy S6 explodes

A Samsung Galaxy S6 exploded inside a home in England on Christmas Eve, missing a six-month old baby boy who was moments before sleeping in the line of fire. The Galaxy S6 was charging on a bedside table when 39-year old Victoria Leeds heard a bang while walking in the hallway of her home. While it wasn’t loud, it was enough for her to run into the bedroom and see what the ruckus was all about. There, she spotted a flame shooting out of her handset. “There was a flame coming from the phone and sparks flying everywhere. They looked like fireworks,” she said.

LG posts info on January 2017 Android security updates

While we still have a few more hours until 2016 reaches its end, LG has decided to go ahead and post the patch numbers on Google’s January 2017 security updates for Android. LG’s website also has information on some patches that are specifically for the company’s handsets.

See also:Google to roll out January’s Android security update next week3 days ago

The website says there will be a total of 73 security patches on the Android side in January, with seven of those updates labeled as “critical”. In addition there will be eight more updates that are just for LG’s smartphones like the LG V20. While there’s no specific info for the Google security updates, other than their identification numbers, there are more details on the eight LG patches. One of them is labeled as “critical” and specifically affects devices that use chips from MediaTek. LG says the patch is to get rid of the MTKLogger application which can log “personal information to storage without user consent” and “can be started by third-party application without user consent.”

Google should start rolling out the Android January 2017 security updates sometime next week. The LG-specific patches will likely follow suit, although their release dates will be influenced by specific carriers who may wait to test the updates on their network.

Report: Apple to cut iPhone production by 10% in the first quarter

It would appear that Apple’s suppliers are expecting Apple to cut production of its iconic smartphone by 10% in the calendar first quarter of 2017. That figure comes from Japan’s Nikkei news agency after it crunched data from the iPhone supply chain. The reason for the cut is to align supply with demand for the device following a calendar fourth quarter that was affected by holiday sales, deals on the latest iPhone models, and other things that threw off the desired balance in the marketplace.

Moto Z gets a new Nougat update, but not to Android 7.1

The Lenovo Moto Z got the Android 7.0 Nougat update last month, but it has already received another software upgrade, and not just of the security patch variety either. The Android version remains at 7.0, but the bizarrely large 540 MB file does add one very necessary thing: a fix for the low volume notification sound issue many Moto Z owners have been suffering for a month.

See also:Mods could one day bring 5G data to the Moto Z series4 weeks ago

That is the only change listed in the update prompt, but there has to be a little more on board other than that in a half-gigabyte file. Post-update, the Moto Z is still rocking the November security update though, so it’s not that. We’ll just have to assume there’s a bunch of other bug fixes and performance improvements in there instead.

The build number is NPL25.86-17-3 and you can check for it manually via Settings > About phone if you don’t see the OTA notification in the next couple days. How humans survived in the barren Atacama Desert 13,000 years ago

Enlarge / The Atacama Desert today is barren, its sands encrusted with salt. And yet there were thriving human settlements there 12,000 years ago. (credit: Vallerio Pilar)

When humans first arrived in the Americas, roughly 18,000 to 20,000 years ago, they traveled by boat along the continents’ shorelines. Many settled in coastal regions or along rivers that took them inland from the sea. Some made it all the way down to Chile quite quickly; there’s evidence for a human settlement there from more than 14,000 years ago at a site called Monte Verde. Another settlement called Quebrada Maní, dating back almost 13,000 years, was recently discovered north of Monte Verde in one of the most arid deserts in the world: the Atacama, whose salt-encrusted sands repel even the hardiest of plants. It seemed an impossible place for early humans to settle, but now we understand how they did it.

At a presentation during the American Geophysical Union meeting this month, UC Berkeley environmental science researcher Marco Pfeiffer explained how he and his team investigated the Atacama desert’s deep environmental history. Beneath the desert’s salt crust, they found a buried layer of plant and animal remains between 9,000 and 17,000 years old. There were freshwater plants and mosses, as well as snails and plants that prefer brackish water. Quickly it became obvious this land had not always been desert—what Pfeiffer and his colleagues saw suggested wetlands fed by fresh water.

The amateur rocket enthusiasts at Copenhagen Suborbitals have been plugging along now for eight years, and after a series of some launch attempts and some failures, the crowdfunded group says it is making progress toward more ambitious goals—including the launch of a human on a suborbital flight.

Founded in 2008, Copenhagen Suborbitals has attempted more than a half-dozen launches of various sized rockets, including the Heat-1X in 2011, believed to be the most powerful amateur rocket ever launched. LG G6: all the rumors in one place

There are a bunch of smartphones we’re looking forward to seeing in 2017. One of them is the upcoming LG G6, which is expected to bring another reboot for the series. But how exactly will the LG G6 look, what will it offer specs-wise, when will it be released, and how much will it retail for? If you’re interested in getting answers to these questions, read on.

We have rounded up the all the latest reports regarding the LG G6 release date, price, specs and features. But do keep in mind that most of these reports are just rumors, so take them with a grain of salt. Just as most manufacturers these days, LG doesn’t reveal much regarding its flagship phones prior to the official release. We can however, offer some educated guesses.

See also:Samsung Galaxy S8: all the rumors in one place18 hours agoLG G6: release date

Last year, LG announced its flagship device — the G5 — in late February, during Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The device went on sale in early April, more than a month after it was officially unveiled.

According to the latest reports, LG has a different strategy set up for the G6. The company will probably still announce the device during MWC but will start selling it a full month earlier than its predecessor. This means that the G6 just might hit markets across the globe around late February or early March.

LG has a good reason for speeding things up. The company wants to get its flagship device on the market before everyone else. Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S8 series of smartphones a bit later than usual next year — in April — which means less competition for the G6 from the start.

The strategy just might work for LG, but on the other hand, people who are really interested in getting a flagship from Samsung or even HTC, which is expected to release the HTC 11 around the same time, probably won’t mind waiting for an additional month or two to get it.

LG G6: specs

Let’s start with the display. According to some rumors, the G6 will swap the LCD screen found on its predecessor for an OLED display. Its size just might stay the same at 5.3-inches, but as always, there is a chance that LG will go bigger.

But even if it does, the difference in size probably won’t be very big. We think that there’s really no reason for LG to increase the display size by much as that would push the smartphone into the phablet territory. If consumers want a bigger phone from LG, they can already opt for the V20.

When it comes to the resolution, the G6 will most likely retain the Quad HD resolution but some rumors do suggest that the device might come with a 4K display. Although it looks nicer, a 4K display does take its toll on the battery life, which is an important factor for consumers when buying – Source

After Cyanogen collapse, Wileyfox is working on its own software updates for Nougat

Wileyfox is a tiny phone manufacturer based in Britain that focuses on solid budget and mid-range designs, with low profit margins partially enabled thanks to a partnership with Cyanogen Inc. for the phones’ Android software. That partnership doesn’t seem to be long for this world, after it was announced that Cyanogen is more or less shutting down its full Android development team. That leaves Wileyfox customers (among many others) in something of a lurch.

One shelter's dogs and cats had the best Christmas of their lives

Christmas is a hard time for so many creatures, hoomins and non-hoomins alike.

These shelter dogs from the Animal Rescue League of Iowa had the time of their lives, however, when staff members allowed them to select a special Christmas toy from underneath the shelter’s “Tree of Life.” The shelter sets up the tree every year to help benefit the animals.

While some of the animals in the video have been adopted, others are still looking for homes.

LG’s new portable speaker floats in mid air, works in water

A few days ago, LG announced that it will show off quite a few new smartphones at CES, which kicks off on January 5. Now, the company has also announced that it will unveil an interesting floating Bluetooth speaker called PJ9 during the trade show in Las Vegas.

The futuristic looking speaker offer 360-degree sound and has an IPX7 rating, meaning it can withstand being submerged in 1 meter (about 3.3 feet) of water for up to 30 minutes. According to the manufacturer, the battery allows for 10 hours of continuous use. And when it runs out of juice, the speaker thankfully won’t crash down on your floor, but will instead safely land on its base, which also serves as the woofer. As soon as it lands, the speaker will start charging automatically.

The speaker has a very simple egg-shaped design that doesn’t stand out too much and magnetically floats above the cylindrical woofer station. It will be available in the Glossy White color option.

LG has not yet revealed the speaker’s price or when exactly will it hit markets across the globe. The company will announce more details during the official presentation of the device, which is just around the corner. So stay tuned everybody.

LineageOS will continue the great legacy of CyanogenMod

CyanogenMod is no more, but its legacy will be carried over by a new community-driven custom ROM project called LineageOS.

Cyanogen Inc., the corporate counterpart to the CyanogenMod community project, recently announced it would shut down its services by the end of the year. Despite initial hopes that the shutdown would not cripple CyanogenMod, the OS project’s website and infrastructure have been taken offline over the Christmas weekend. The abrupt and unceremonious closure appears to be the end of the CyanogenMod project as we know it.

UPDATE: As of this morning we have lost DNS and Gerrit is now offline – with little doubt as a reaction to our blog post yesterday. Goodbye

— CyanogenMod (@CyanogenMod) December 25, 2016

While CyanogenMod appears to be dead for all intents and purposes, there’s a silver lining: some of the developers behind the project are rallying behind LineageOS, a “fork” of CyanogenMod. Presumably, that includes CyanogenMod’s father, Steve Kondik, who recently left Cyanogen Inc.

According to a final post on the CyanogenMod blog (now taken offline), LineageOS is more than a rebranding of CyanogenMod. “This fork will return to the grassroots community effort that used to define CM while maintaining the professional quality and reliability you have come to expect more recently,” said the CyanogenMod team.

The post also clarifies why a fork was necessary. Cyanogen Inc holds on to the “CyanogenMod” brand and, in theory, it could prevent the community from using the name or even sell the brand to a third-party. “Even if we were to regroup and rebuild our own infrastructure, continuing development of CM would mean to operate with the threat of sale of the brand looming over our heads.”

Some crucial details about LineageOS are missing. We don’t know who is working on the new project, what their development plans are, or how they plan to raise the significant funds needed for the venture. For now, the LineageOS website only contains a blog post that confirms the transition and promises more information for Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the sole, pithy tweet on LineageOS’ account reads:

Even during the holidays, 2016 is being a jerk

Naples’ sleeping volcano might be waking up

Enlarge / Sulfurous gases leak from a fumarole near Naples, Italy. (credit: leolumix)

Waking up is, in the sage words of Sum 41, hard to do. The experience leaves many of us temporarily irritable, such that many of us choose to leave certain loved ones alone until they’ve had time to completely reach a conscious state. Volcanoes are not entirely dissimilar. After lying dormant for decades or more, they can wake up violently—and the best case scenario for people in the vicinity is to get out of their way. But while the alarm clock can give you a good idea of when a human may wake up, a volcano’s wake up schedule remains frustratingly and frighteningly cryptic.

Campi Flegrei is a caldera—a collapsed volcanic crater—near Naples, Italy that formed 39,000 years ago in the biggest eruption in Europe’s last 200,000 years. It now sports fields of gaseous vents indicating that the volcano is still alive below the surface. The volcano has been closely monitored—for good reason—and its activity in recent decades has given geologists a lot to study.

In the 1950s, the surface above the caldera began swelling, rising by a total of more than 3 meters since. In 1983 and 1984, its pace quickened, and a flurry of shallow earthquakes and other activity made for a worrying change. That was the end of it, though, and Campi Flegrei slumbered quietly until 2005. Since then, the surface has risen another 0.4 meters, the pace accelerating slowly.

EMUI 5.0 will also allow the Honor 8 to run different user profiles. In other words, you can switch between a work profile on the phone and your more personal one quickly. And the iFixit award for the most repairable phone of 2016 goes to…

iFixit does a lot of tearing down – from smartphones to earbuds. It tells us how easy (or hard) it is to repair a device on your own, which could be extremely useful for the fearless among us. Now, the iFixit team has revealed which smartphone from 2016 was the most fixable and which was the least fixable, and the results aren’t all that surprising.

See also:LG G5 teardown shows it’s an easy fixApril 6, 2016

The winner is LG’s modular flagship, the G5. As you may have guessed, its modular design and user removable battery play a role in making this the easiest to repair among the bunch that iFixit tested this year. Overall, it received a score of 8 out of 10, meaning not only is it easy to take apart, but given the nature of how the phone is assembled, it should also be relatively easy for you to replace its internals on your own.

Overall, LG G5 received a score of 8 out of 10, meaning not only is it easy to take apart, but it should also be relatively easy for you to replace its internals on your own.

Ironically, whereas LG’s not so successful flagship took the first place in reparability, Samsung’s extremely popular Galaxy S7 took the last spot with an abysmal score of 3. Both the Galaxy S7 and the S7 edge, according to iFixit, are held together by a large amount of glue, which makes sense given their slim profiles and the lack of screws. These smartphones are “very difficult” to open and repair.

In between the G5 and the S7, we have some of our favorite gadgets of the year. Right behind the G5’s 8/10, we have the Pixel duo with a score of 7. iFixit says that the Pixel phones are “difficult to open without breaking the screen,” so I would probably take them to Google should there be a problem. After that, we have Apple’s iPhone 7 and the Plus. Apparently, the battery and the screen are pretty straightforward in terms of reparability, but taking the devices apart requires four different screwdrivers.

Interestingly enough, the Galaxy Note 7 (bless its soul) is also ranked at the bottom of the chart. With a score of 4, it is just slightly better than the Galaxy S7. But at any rate, the device has officially been recalled, so you shouldn’t be fixing it yourself in the first place.

Google confirms that it's launching two flagship Android Wear smartwatches in early 2017

Two reports from a few months ago claimed that Google was working on two high-end smartwatches of its own, which were supposed to debut alongside the Android Wear 2.0 release this year. But then the new version of the company’s wearable OS got delayed until 2017, and so we assumed the launch of the watches was postponed for that reason.

It turns out that’s exactly what happened. Today Jeff Chang, Google’s product manager of Android Wear, has confirmed that the company is developing two flagship smartwatches which will be on the market in the first quarter of next year (so before March…

HTC 10 owners, how's the Nougat update treating you?

While others wait, the U.S. unlocked HTC 10 has Android 7.0.

The HTC 10 was one of the more underappreciated phones of the past year. HTC’s 2016 flagship didn’t flash about too many gimmicky features — instead, it just focused on being a great all-around phone. And the ’10 has gotten even better recently, at least for some owners, with the arrival of Android 7.0 Nougat for the U.S. unlocked version.

Nougat brings new features to HTC’s flagship with minimal visual changes.

As with Marshmallow, HTC isn’t messing with Nougat too much. Android 7.0 on the HTC 10 is a clean, uncluttered experience with just a handful of visual tweaks compared to older versions. So you’re getting vanilla, Google-flavored Nougat, with a handful of HTC features, like the BlinkFeed-equipped launcher, the manufacturer’s messaging and dialer apps, and under-the-hood optimizations.

If you’re one of the lucky ones to have already received the update on your HTC 10 (or you’ve manually flashed the RUU), we want to hear how you’re getting on. As the year closes out, has your HTC 10 stood the test of time? Have new Nougat features like split-screen multi-window and bundled notifications revitalized your device? Or were you hoping for more from the update?

And if you’re still waiting, are you happy with the phone as it is on Marshmallow, or are you chomping at the bit for a taste of Nougat?

Share your thoughts down in the comments, and be sure to head over to the HTC 10 forums for more discussion!

Why you won't want to rewatch 'Rogue One'

It had been a long 10 days since I’d first seen Rogue One in the euphoric setting of the world premiere in Los Angeles. Since then, I’d been on the road constantly — Las Vegas, New York — and hadn’t had a moment to book a second screening.

The movie was replaying in broken chunks in my head, and I needed to re-up as badly as any nerd. Thanks to a ticket from the Mashable art department, I finally got my second thrill-ride adrenaline fix. But afterward I found to my surprise that I was less interested in a third hit.

LONDON — Finding an unidentified object in one’s food is never a pleasant experience — but there’s something even more disturbing about finding an object you can’t even identify.

Richard Noon, a 33-year-old CRM manager at the University of Huddersfield, recently had just such an experience.

On Wednesday, he opened a bag of Burts Potato Chips only to discover a hard brown lump occupying the majority of the packet.

India's federal bank just can't make up its mind on demonetization

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), India’s federal bank, has now been touted as the ‘Reverse Bank of India’ or even the ‘Rollback Bank of India’, following its most recent U-turn that has to do with the deposit of scrapped currency notes.

Three days ago, the RBI had issued its 59th circular since demonetization, restricting people from depositing over Rs 5,000 ($73.7) in old banknotes more than once till Dec. 30.

One of the clauses had also said that any deposit exceeding that amount would be put through questioning by two bank officials, who have to be given a “satisfactory explanation” for why the old notes were not deposited earlier. …

Flashtool update includes Android 7.0 Nougat support

No one will blame you if you haven’t heard of Flashtool. This is because the software only supports Sony devices (Xperia Z10 to Xperia Z Ultra), and it is only relevant to tinkerers. The helpful tool can be used to unlock bootloaders and flash custom ROMs. It cool can be really easy and convenient, but until today it didn’t have support for Nougat, Android’s latest version.

Today Flashtool gets upgraded to version 0.9.23.0, which does include compatibility with Android Nougat. And while that is the most exciting improvement in this update, there are a few other things to enjoy. These include TA raw backup for devices exploitable by the dirtycow vulnerability, a more accurate USB log parse, a notice that will inform you whether you can use Flashtool Script and more. You can see the changelog here.
